It has been a difficult year. I placed an ad in the Globe and Mail for letters of encouragement and received 44 letters. I then placed a thank you ad and answered the letters that had return addresses with a hand printed thank you card. It remarkable that all these people took the time to write to a complete stranger....

Song and Dance is an accumulation of stories, some fictional, some autobiographical, which explore circumstances that make up ones' identity. A familiar, yet strange basement den is built to house the constructed narratives. Silkscreened text on mass-produced 1980's offset portraits adorn wood paneled walls. The print-based project visits notions of identity, family, secret lives and residue of presence.

Des tambours et des trompettes est une accumulation d'histoires fictives et autobiographiques explorant des notions de famille, d'identité et de vie secrète. Des énoncés sont sérigraphiés sur des images produites en série des années '80 et ces cadres sont logés dans un salon familial kitsch. Une présence dissimulée habite cette pièce familière mais déconcertante.

Les friperies sont remplies de projets du dimanche inachevés et de vestiges de loisirs abandonnés tels que le crochet, le point de croix, la couture, la dentelle, la peinture, la courtepointe, la fabrication de maquette, le travail du bois, etc. Jennifer pense que vous devriez terminer ce que vous avez commencé. Bien qu’elle ne connaisse pas ces arts (pour lesquels elle n’est probablement pas vraiment douée), elle achètera 10 projets inachevés, en apprendra les différentes techniques, terminera les œuvres comme bon lui semble, consignera le tout et les redonnera au magasin. Finish What You Started.

Second hand stores are filled with unfinished Sunday projects and remnants of abandoned hobbies in mediums such as: crochet, cross-stitch, knitting, needlepoint, painting, quilting, model making, woodworking etc…. Jennifer thinks you should finish what you started. Although she is unfamiliar with these arts (and possibly not very skillful), she will purchase 10 different unfinished projects, learn the new techniques, complete the pieces as she sees fit, document and return them to the store. She is going to finish what you started. This project was made possible through an ArtsNB creation grant.

Series of altered garments from second hand clothing stores. Garments are purchased, embroidered and returned to the store. Embroidery on winter coat, (tear, fang, rectum and Xmas decoration were additions to the scene on the pink coat), April 2008 and ongoing.

The Tree Hole Project

A tree hole is a good place to hide something; it is also a good place to find something- a paper doll, a trinket, a game, a handwritten note.
I am recently very interested in the accidental observer rather than the gallery goer. When you find or see something new on your way to work or school, it alters your day.
The edition of 25 hand-pulled silkscreened paper houses were placed in downtown tree holes in Halifax. The bottom of each object reads finders keepers. beljen@hotmail.com.

I have always believed that if hair was meant to keep me warm, I should have some on my nose and forehead. I get an intense satisfaction in frightening pigeons and would one day, enjoy contributing to the research that will make them eat and enjoy cigarette butts. On the dreary days when inspiration reels and the tip of my nose shadows my line of vision, I write myself letters of encouragement and send them in the mail.

Jennifer Bélanger is very interested in the accidental observer and the ordinary and daily as matter for art. Bélanger has a BFA from Université de Moncton and an MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.
